So this week I’ve been downloading a big file.
It’s not your typical file. It has nothing to do with my computer or anything electronic. It has everything to do with life and my future.
We get suggestions for updates on all of our devices. Little red bubbles pop up and tell us to what to do. It’s pretty seamless— the biggest inconvenience seems to be the wait time. I know I get bugged when I have to restart my computer, save everything, and make sure my laptop is plugged in. It’s part of life. The updates help things go right.
I had a little red bubble pop up last week. Not on my laptop but in my heart. These updates are easier to ignore. We can push them away for years and years. I am learning to honor them. You see if you were to look at my iPhone screen you’d see no red bubbles. I like a clean screen. Everything up to date, every email checked, voicemail listened to, text message answered. I hate having them there staring me in the face. I want the same for my life.
So when I began sensing last week while I was in Mexico that I had an update coming I stayed with it. I hit install instead of ignoring it. I began to sense it was a big file so I stuck it out even longer. I had to walk the dog nightly for a long, long time and listen. I had to turn off distractions and make time to meditate, pray. I had to be patient.
I had to notice fears and insecurities while the information came flooding in.
I had to understand each byte of information and see it as a puzzle piece. I wanted to make things go right so I helped. I helped the download along by helping put the puzzle together.
I think that is where we give up. Our fast paced and seamless technology lead us to believe that our lives, everything about our lives, should be the same. The bigger the file, the longer the wait—the more work to be done. It means more time spent on the puzzle. It requires an attitude of making things go right.
I want this for everyone. This week has been a blessing. A revelation in the sense that I was revealing me to myself in such a naturally human process that we’ve duplicated it in our technology.
We all need updates.
How many red bubbles do you have waiting?
I hope you’ll give them space to download.
Imagine what they’d bring to your life. We often don’t understand what they’ll bring (just like computer updates) but we know good will always come.
