I have 2 blood related nephews, and 3 nieces. And then there are those “chosen” children who call me “Aunt Marcy” too. Regardless of how we came into each other’s lives, I adore them all.
I’ve never lived close to my sisters and their children, always separated by at least a 2 hour plane ride. I remember, when they were young, how I worried that they would not know me. But what I realized through the years is that when you really love a child they know it. Love travels via heart waves in a way that is certain and palpable.
This picture below was taken over 20 years ago. Jason on the left is now a father. Then there is Jodi who just got married last year. And there is me….yes me (with the very 80’s hair), next to my Stacey who now works with children every day as a teacher. On the far right is Suzanna, my NY cosmopolitan jet setter 26 year young gal who moves as fast as her Auntie. Alex, now 23 is missing from this shot, since he was just a babes, probably snoozin when this picture was taken. Now he is clearly taking after his Aunt by going for his doctorate in Colorado. Can’t I claim genetic credit for planting that very small seed?
Since Jason has had a son, now the girls know what it feels like to be an Adoring Auntie. They now look at their nephew the way I looked at them. It is the next generation blooming and it is a thrill to behold.
