This story was originally reported October 7, 2013 on the Tampa Bay Times, and is spreading like wildfire through the media. It reminds those of us who are thinking about adoption to really stop and consider older children and teens. They are yearning for “real” homes and families, and their options are painfully slim.
By standing up in front of a church and asking for a family to adopt him, Davion Only not only showed gumption, but also shined a spotlight on the many teens who still hope—at least fervently wish—for a forever family.
This courageous move has opened up his life not only to experiences and opportunities he had never imagined (including a chance to appear on the Today show and The View), but also to do the same for other orphaned teens like himself.
In a followup story on Tampa Bay Times, Lane DeGregory (who also covered the original story) reports that 10,000 families have applied to adopt Davion! His agency has brought in volunteers to help handle the tremendous response, and is reminding applicants to consider the other children in their care who would thrive in a permanent home.
